History

Starting from 1961, after the B1 program/courses, which included B1 Law, B1 Economics, and History, merged into Hasanuddin University, the B1 program/courses evolved in 1965 into departments such as Civic Law, General Economics, Business Economics, History, and Earth Sciences within the Faculty of Social Science Education (FKPS), Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) Makassar.

In response to changes within IKIP Makassar, FKPS was renamed to the Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FKIS). After a few years, FKIS was again renamed to FPIPS and later to FIS, which eventually became the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FEIS). In 1999, Presidential Decree No. 93 of 1999 was issued, converting six IKIPs across Indonesia into universities. IKIP Ujungpandang was transformed into Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), expanding its mandate to produce graduates in both educational and non-educational fields.

In line with this primary mission, during the 1999/2000 academic year, UNM received a mandate from the Directorate of Higher Education, Depdiknas, to open a Bachelor’s degree (S1) Management program as a precursor to the establishment of a Faculty of Economics. Since the Management program under the Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS) was deemed inadequate to accommodate the Management program, it evolved into the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FEIS). FEIS UNM, which managed students in Economics, was required to meet the demands and interests of the community in response to developments and advancements in the fields of education, business, and industry. To address these challenges, it was deemed urgent to have a standalone Faculty of Economics (FE) separate from FEIS. Thus, on September 27, 2007, the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Department of National Education issued a letter approving the establishment of the Faculty of Economics at UNM. Following this letter, the UNM Rector issued Decree No. 6822/H.36/KL/2007 on November 27, 2007, officially establishing the Faculty of Economics at UNM. The Faculty of Economics at UNM oversees: the Bachelor’s programs in Economic Education, Accounting Education, Management, Development Economics, Accounting (S1), and Accounting (D3).
